SIFF Announces 2024 Line-Up, Honors Seattle Native Jean Smart

The word is out as SIFF just announced its massive lineup for the 50th Seattle International Film Festival.

And what do we mean by massive? The fest kicks off on May 9th and runs through May 19th and during those 11 days moviegoers will get to choose from 261 films. It’s quite a mix and there is something there for every taste in movies including 92 features, 47 documentaries, and 115 short films, representing 84 countries.

Highlights, Premieres, and Special Tributes

As we previously reported, the fest kicks off with the action-comedy “Thelma,” featuring a feisty 93-year-old (actress June Squibb) on a wild quest. Squibb will be in Seattle opening night for the film and Q&A, and will also receive a 2024 Golden Space Needle Award.

Also noted, the festival closes with “Sing Sing,” a true story about a theater troupe within a prison. The film’s ensemble cast, who will receive a Golden Space Needle Award for excellence in Ensemble Acting, will also be in Seattle for the fest.

New to the 2024 lineup is the addition of Academy Award-nominated actress (and Seattle native) Jean Smart. Smart will be in town to receive The Hollywood Reporter’s Trailblazer Award. And for her lucky fans who have been waiting for the next season of Hacks to drop, there will be a screening of an episode of the hit HBO series to get you primed for season three.

We recently saw the world premiere of the first two episodes of Hacks season 3 at SXSW with Smart and the cast in attendance. The episodes (as well as Jean Smart) were whip smart as usual and were met with a standing ovation, so you’ll want to make sure to check this one out.

More Award-Winners

Other fest highlights include Sundance award-winner “Dìdi (弟弟),” “Babes” written by and starring Ilana Glazer and directed by Pamela Adlon, and “399: Queen of the Tetons.” Trust us, if you want to see the most Instagram-famous grizzly bear in a new light, 399 is a must see.

And if you want to know what had the audiences at SXSW a buzz, check out “Bob Trevino Likes It,” which took home the Audience Award for Narrative Feature last month.

That just barely scratches the surface. We’ll be posting more film and event recommendations in the coming weeks. In the meantime, passes and individual tickets are on sale to SIFF members now and to the public on April 18th. Visit SIFF for more info on tickets, festival packages and events.
