Film fest season in Seattle is in full swing as the SEA Nordic Film Festival kicks-off next week.

SEA Nordic Film Festival will be bringing the best in Nordic films to the silver screen. This year, that silver screen is at the Majestic Bay Theatre in Ballard. The fest also contains a slimmed down virtual component if you are not ready to get back to in-person screenings.

Award-winning films and performances

There are a couple of performances to keep an eye on at SEA Nordic Film Festival. In fact, the fest highlights the work of two actresses who took home the Best Actress Award at Cannes Film Festival in both 2021 and 2022.

The opening night film is “Holy Spider.” As the Danish entry for Best International Feature Film at this year’s Oscars, “Holy Spider” centers around an investigation into a serial killer targeting sex workers. The lead actress, Zar Amir Ebrahimi, won the prestigious Best Actress Award at Cannes last year for her performance.

This three-day fest has plenty of gems – from the aforementioned crime drama to the breezy, but not so light, “The Worst Person in the World” from Norway.  Renate Reinsve, who starred in the film, also snagged the Best Actress Award at Cannes in 2021 for her performance.

Also on tap is the Icelandic folk horror movie “Lamb,” which had a very enthusiastic, one night screening during last year’s Taste of Iceland. If you didn’t catch it then – this one is highly recommended.

The virtual offerings serve up a handful of short films, a documentary and a feature, the Swedish teenage comedy/drama “So Damn Easy Going” (also screening in-person).

In-person screenings are pretty evenly divided between docs and feature films. In the latter category, “The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic” wowed audiences at last year’s SIFF festival. The Finnish thriller took home the 2022 Fool Serious Award for best actor, best director, and best script.

Speaking of SIFF, the Seattle International Film Festival will follow on the heals of the SEA Nordic Film Festival starting May 11.

The SEA Nordic Film Festival opens Friday, April 21 and runs through Sunday, April 23. Presented by the National Nordic Museum, all in-person screenings take place at the Majestic Bay Theatres.
