The final piece of the TIFF 2026 puzzle is finally in place.

The Toronto International Film Festival has unveiled its complete 2026 lineup, bringing the 51st edition to a total of 293 titles. After weeks of individual announcements across Galas, Special Presentations, Centrepiece and the festival’s other sections, we can finally see what this year’s TIFF is really working with.

And there’s plenty to work with.

The final additions announced today include some major names, including Werner Herzog, Martin McDonagh and Nanni Moretti, along with several films that could become considerably more important once the fall festival season gets moving.

For anyone tracking the 2026 awards race, this is the point where TIFF stops being a series of announcements and starts becoming a competition. The festival remains one of the most important stops on the fall circuit, particularly for films looking to build North American momentum before the Oscar race gets serious.

The final TIFF 2026 additions

TIFF added 11 feature films to the Official Selection today.

Werner Herzog arrives in Special Presentations with Bucking Fastard, while Oscar winner Martin McDonagh brings Wild Horse Nine, a USA-Chile co-production making its Canadian premiere.

They’re joined in Special Presentations by Stéphane Brizé’s A Good Little Soldier, Guy Nattiv’s The Liberation, and The Idiot(s) from Polish filmmaking team Małgorzata Szumowska and Michał Englert.

Nanni Moretti’s It Will Happen Tonight will make its International Premiere in Special Presentations, giving one of Italy’s most recognizable auteurs another high-profile Toronto slot.

There are also two world premieres in the section: Peter Ho-Sun Chan’s The Road Not Taken and Cody Fern’s Closing Night.

Music documentaries get a major addition as well. Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn’s Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple will have its World Premiere at TIFF, turning the spotlight on the late Rush drummer and one of the most influential musicians ever to come out of Canada.

The Gala section gets a North American Premiere with Bai Xue’s It’s My Time, while Iranian filmmaker Bahman Ghobadi’s Trees are Watching joins Centrepiece for its World Premiere.

What the complete TIFF lineup tells us

The sheer size of the festival is worth noting.

TIFF 2026 runs from September 10 through September 20, with 293 titles spread across the festival’s various sections. Opening day alone will feature 75 film premieres across downtown Toronto venues and TIFF Lightbox.

That makes TIFF less a single festival lineup than a giant September sorting process.

Some movies will arrive with obvious awards ambitions. Others are looking for distribution, reviews, sales or simply the kind of Toronto audience response that can change their trajectory. And then there are the films that nobody is talking about yet that can suddenly become the ones everyone is talking about after a couple of screenings.

That is one of the reasons TIFF matters so much to the fall movie calendar. It can help determine which movies become part of the conversation for the rest of the year.

For awards watchers, that makes the full TIFF 2026 lineup particularly interesting. TIFF has long been an important Oscar launchpad, and the festival’s People’s Choice Award has an especially strong history of identifying films that go on to have serious awards-season lives.

The question now isn’t whether TIFF has a strong lineup. It does. The more interesting question is which of these 293 films actually matter?

That’s where the rankings start to get interesting.

When TIFF 2026 tickets go on sale

The festival runs September 10 to 20, with TIFF Members getting first access to tickets by membership tier beginning Friday, August 21.

Public single-ticket sales open Monday, August 31.
