TIFF 2026: Apple’s ‘Being Heumann’ Set as Opening Night Film

The Toronto International Film Festival has set Apple’s Being Heumann as its opening night film for the upcoming 51st edition, which runs September 10 to 20.
Directed by Siân Heder, the film will make its world premiere at Roy Thomson Hall on Thursday, September 10. The project marks Heder’s high-profile return to the festival circuit following her Oscar win for CODA.
TIFF organizers also confirmed two other major world premieres for the Gala Presentations lineup. British director Susanna White will debut Prima Facie, an adaptation of the hit stage play, while South Korean filmmaker Hur Jin-ho will premiere his latest project, The Assassin(s). All three titles represent the first hint at the programming for this year’s fest, which serves as a critical launching pad for year-end awards contenders.
The festival is looking to build on last year’s attendance numbers, which hit roughly 700,000 across the 11-day run. Alongside the main slate, organizers confirmed the return of standard festival fixtures including the live post-screening Q&As and the In Conversation With… interview series.
The pedestrian-only Festival Street activations will also return to King Street West for the opening weekend, running from Peter Street to University Avenue with food trucks and public events. Expect more lineup announcements to roll out over the next month.
