Franklin Barbecue in Austin is legendary. And fittingly, the party thrown there by Crunchy Frog Recordings during SXSW was of legendary proportions

Pint-sized Franklin Barbecue is known to have hour-long queues of BBQ buffs waiting to get their hands (and lips) on their melt in your mouth smoked brisket. 

But this particular evening there was no line, as Crunchy Frog took over Franklin with an invite-only party they called Meat & Greed to highlight a couple of artists in town to play the fest.

The Courettes

With hundreds of bands taking to stages throughout SXSW, you want to make sure you make an unforgettable entrance. Thanks to Crunchy Frog and Franklin Barbecue, The Courettes – a rock duo from Denmark and Brazil – busted on to the Austin scene with a ferocious bang. 

With Martin Couri banging the drums and Flavia Couri slaying the packed room with her tight guitar riffs and jaunty attire, the husband and wife duo shook the walls of Franklin Barbecue with their fast and furious set. Their sound has been described as “a blend between garage rock, 60s Girl Group, Wall of Sound, surf music and doo wop” and it was all on display as Flavia rocked her way through (and sometimes on) the tables of the lucky guests as they shouted on the The Courettes with enthusiasm. 

With Ki! setting the mood with his eclectic instrumentals and The Courettes finishing it off at volume 11, it was a raucous party that not only featured brisket, ribs, and sausage by the pound (and some whiskey),  but also a perfect shot of high energy fun to keep everyone going until the end of the fest.

The Courettes have been touring throughout Europe since 2015 but never in the US, until now.

The Courettes just announced their first tour tour dates on the West Coast.  And, if you are in the Los Angeles area on May 7 – definitely grab tickets to their record release party and performance at the quintessential West Hollywood club, Viper Room. Outside of Franklin Barbeque, we can’t think of a more perfect intimate venue to catch the rock & roll antics of The Courettes.
