Soundscapes Wash Over OTB and The Meany This Weekend
This weekend, performance artists at OTB and the Meany offer up evenings filled with multi-layered soundscapes.
Dancer and choreographer, Faye Driscoll, was slated to perform at On The Boards this time last year. But, with the wave of the Omicron variant still in the air, Driscoll’s performance at OTB had to be postponed.
Now, as it has become relatively safe to mix and mingle, Driscoll is back this weekend with the final work in her ‘Thank You For Coming’ series.
The year delay lands with a bit of fortuity, as performance artist and clarinetist, Holland Andrews is also in town this weekend with their performance at the Meany Center. Aside from the timing, there is another connection between the performances at OTB and the Meany. Produced in partnership with Bill T. Jones and New York Live Arts, the Meany production is also co-presented with On The Boards.
Both Driscoll and Andrews come to Seattle with solo performances, and both lean heavily on sound.
Andrews, who is known for their ambient and noise music, layers hypnotic soundscapes “through abstract operatic and extended vocal techniques, coupled with a dynamic range of sonic influences.”
If you attended Portland Institute for Contemporary Art’s TBA over the past several years, you may have had the cathartic experience that Andrews performances can often elicit. While in Seattle, their performance is part of ‘Becoming: At Home in the World,’ a 5-part series at the Meany, guest curator by Bill T. Jones.
As we mentioned last year when we picked Driscoll’s show at OTB as a ‘must see,’ the evening will be an intimate, and sometimes interactive, experience limited to 100 people per performance.
And even though a year has passed, our anticipation for this program remains high.
