SIFF Opens With Irish Charm: ‘Four Mothers’ to Launch 51st Seattle International Film Festival

SIFF is set to kick off this year’s fest with a bit of heart and hilarity with “Four Mothers.” The 51st Seattle International Film Festival will open with the Irish comedy from director Darren Thornton, anchoring the Opening Night Film & Party on Thursday, May 15 at the Paramount Theatre.
Following the screening, the festivities will spill out into the theater and onto Ninth Avenue – a celebration that officially kicks off the 10-day festival that will screen films showcasing the latest in cinema from around the globe.
Having charmed audiences at its 2024 debut at the BFI London Film Festival, “Four Mothers” follows Edward, a queer, rising-star novelist caught in the chaos of juggling media obligations and caring for his aging mother. When Edward’s three best friends embark on a spontaneous Pride getaway, they leave their own mothers in Edward’s somewhat reluctant care. Intergenerational mayhem, self-discovery, and the unexpected joys of found family all ensue in this pleasing comedy.
“This is a cheeky, truly heartwarming film and the perfect way to kick off our 51st annual Seattle International Film Festival,” said SIFF Artistic Director Beth Barrett in a statement. “This year we’re proud to have films from over 70 countries throughout the festival’s 10 days, and as always, a big focus on independent voices and filmmakers.”
“Four Mothers” leads the charge as SIFF’s opener which adds to the five additional titles previously announced as part of the early slate.
Tickets for the Opening Night Film & Party are available now online and in person at SIFF Cinema box offices.
