They’ve teased out six films that will screen during the 50th Seattle International Film Festival, now we know seven.

SIFF just announced that the action-comedy “Thelma” will kick off the fest on the evening of May 9th. The film, written and directed by Josh Margolin, stars veteran actress June Squibb and will be followed by a Q&A session featuring Margolin, Squibb, and producers Zoë Worth and Chris Kaye.

The festivities spill out into the streets after the Q&A with an outdoor block party next to the Paramount Theatre.

Not only does the film open the fest, but Squibb will also be honored with the 2024 Golden Space Needle Award for Outstanding Contribution to Cinema.

“Thelma,” which debuted at Sundance earlier this year, is inspired by a true story with Squibb taking on the role of the spirited 93-year-old Thelma Post. After falling victim to a phone scam, Post finds herself on a quest to recover her stolen money. This role marks Squibb’s first lead in a feature film.

“SIFF is ecstatic to celebrate June Squibb’s work by presenting her with the 2024 Seattle International Film Festival’s Golden Space Needle Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinema” said Beth Barrett, SIFF’s Artistic Director. “Over her decades-long career, Squibb has cultivated exceptional skill in her craft. Her magnetism and charisma shines through her many memorable roles and her work in Thelma is no exception.”

Special tribute

The festival’s celebration of Squibb extends beyond the opening night.  On May 11th, SIFF Cinema Downtown will host a special tribute event featuring a conversation with the actress, moderated by Variety’s Jenelle Riley, followed by an audience Q&A.  Fans can also attend an exclusive brunch with Squibb before the conversation.

The Seattle International Film Festival runs from May 9th to 19th. Tickets for the Opening Night Film & Party are available now online and in person at SIFF Cinema box offices.
