Catch these 3 SXSW Standouts During Final 5 Days of SIFF 2022
It’s almost hard to believe, but SIFF is officially halfway through its 2022 fest. What use to be a dizzying 25-day run, the fest now spans 11-days with in-person and online screenings.
But, that doesn’t mean there’s a shortage of films to see. In fact, this year’s fest still boasts over 100 features, nearly 50 docs and more than 150 short films. Which means planning your film fest schedule in advance is a wise move.
With five days left, hardcore moviegoers may try to squeeze in 15 more films before the final curtain is drawn. That may be a little ambitious for some, so here are five films you may want to check out over the next several days.
The Good Boss – Screened at SXSW
There’s a reason this film received so many Goya nominations. Javier Bardem, who eventually took home the Goya for best actor, turns in a pitch-perfect performance as a boss whose burnished image starts to show some wear. A dark comedy that will have you laughing and cringing, often at the same time. SCREENS Wed, April 20 at SIFF Cinema Uptown.
Everything Went Fine
The latest from lauded French filmmaker, François Ozon. This stellar cast includes award-winning Sophia Marceau, along with Geraldine Paihas and Charlotte Rampling. Two daughters are asked to aid their father in his ultimate last wish – to die with dignity. The subject matter may sound a bit heavy, but Ozon and crew balances the tough decisions that need to be made (that not only affect the father, but the daughters as well) with the right amount of levity and plenty of heart. SCREENS Thursday, April 21 at SIFF Cinema Uptown.
Softie
At ten years old, Johnny has a lot of responsibility. Looking after his younger sister in a somewhat tumultuous home life, Johnny also has to deal with the fact that others (including his mother) don’t see him as being tough enough. Back at school, Johnny earns the attention of a new teacher. As Johnny begins to explore his feelings, his self journey takes on more urgency and more control on how he might want to go through life. Another strong cast all around – Aliocha Reinert as Johnny is a standout. SCREENS Saturday, April 23 at SIFF Cinema Uptown and Sunday, April 24 at SIFF Cinema Egyptian.
Marcel the Shell with Shoes On – Screened at SXSW
If you are familiar with Marcel the Shell from Youtube, you’ll definitely want to see this feature length treatment on the big screen. If you’ve never heard of Marcel the Shell before this, then you’re in for a real treat. Dean Fleischer-Camp and Jenny Slate revisit and round out Marcel’s journey as he goes in search of his long-lost family. Marcel’s sly and insightful observations on life are on full display and you’ll find yourself warmly soaking up their wisdom over the next 90-minutes. Broadcast news heavyweights like Leslie Stahl make an appearance to aid in Marcel’s search. Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is a pure delight. SCREENS Saturday, April 23 at SIFF Cinema Egyptian and Sunday, April 24 at SIFF Cinema Uptown.
Cha Cha Real Smooth – Screened at SXSW
A favorite at Sundance and at SXSW, this movie is also sure to delight SIFF audiences. This comedy written and directed by Cooper Raiff is about Andrew, a party starter for bar mitzvahs. Andrew (also played by Raiff) finds himself aimlessly going through life as he is trying to find his footing after college. While hosting a party, Andrew finds himself falling for a somewhat older (and somewhat engaged) mother. As their relationship grows closer, he finds himself more grounded and ready to take a path with more intention. This film is not only funny, it’s heartfelt and you’ll find yourself rooting for all of the characters, and the paths they ultimately choose for themselves – and for the one’s they love.
