Plenty to See as SIFF 2023 Line-Up Clocks in at 264 Films
Well, the SIFF picture just got a whole lot clearer. SIFF just announced its full line-up for this year’s fest. And just like last year, this festival comes in at over 260 films. That’s a heavy lift, but we’re here for it.
As we wrote earlier, SIFF kicks off on May 11 with its opening night film “Past Lives.” We now know what film will close the fest (“I Like Movies”) 10 days later on May 21. We also have the full run down on every feature (94), short (125) and doc (45) that will screen in between.
The only films we are still in the dark about (for good reason) are the two secret screenings.
But between the other 260-plus films we do know of, there is plenty to get excited about.
A couple of music themed films immediately jump out. “Love to Love You, Donna Summer” and “Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes” may be polar opposites in genre, but both docs feature seminal artists who have become icons in the world in jazz and disco.
For those more inclined to watch a ball game instead of hitting up a disco or jazz club, “Stephen Curry: Underrated” should scratch your movie itch. And, we should know by the time the film screens on May 13 whether or not Curry and the Warriors are still in contention for the NBA title.
Foodies can tuck into a couple of docs that should satiate their film cravings. Even if you’re not a foodie it would be hard to pass up “Stella,” which transports us to a pizzeria in Naples in their quest to become the first Michelin-starred pizzeria in the world. Although it’s doubtful you’ll find a $2 slice there.
And since pizza and beer seem to go together quite nicely, “Bottle Conditioned” could be a perfect companion to ‘Stella.” This is your chance to geek out on Belgium lambics.
If you are looking for breathtaking beauty, then the epic journey though the Italian Alps in “Eight Mountains” should have you glued to your seat. It certainly struck a chord at Cannes last year, as it took home the celebrated Grand Jury Prize.
This just scratches the surface. If you’re interested in planning your SIFF schedule you can find the full line-up here.
And, of course, we’ll be along for the 10-day ride – updating you with recommendations and our favorite moments throughout the fest.
