Mixy Music Monday: The Spiritual Machines Explore Human Connection in AI Era
Producer and musician Evan Frankfort’s project, The Spiritual Machines, has released a new single titled “You Can’t Hear Me.” The track serves as the opening salvo for their latest album “Lockhearted.” The album draws inspiration from futurist Ray Kurzweil’s prediction of computers developing souls, reimagining this idea for the current age of artificial intelligence.
Of the track, Frankfort shares: “How can we be communicating so clearly and somehow not connecting? We have two ears and one mouth…we should listen twice as much as we speak. We must offer the desire to hear if we want to be heard.”
“You Can’t Hear Me” is a mix of glossy synthesizers, straight-from-the-shoulder percussion, and inspired horns. The overall affect paints a lush 80s sensibility, with the hypnotic animated video that further underscores the single’s impact.
“Lockhearted” may tackle weighty themes like technology and humanity, but it’s far from a pessimistic view of our present and future. Frankfort takes on multiple roles, writing, producing, and mixing all tracks, as well as providing vocals and instrumentals. Collaborators include Future Aaron on vocals and bass, TV theme composer Craig Owens on keyboards, and French drummer Matt LeChavalier.
