Mixy Music Monday: Pharrell Williams and Legos, ‘Piece by Piece’
Pharrell Williams is back, and this time he’s in Lego form. Adding to his long list of music accomplishments, the 13 Grammy award-winner just released “Piece by Piece,” an animated biographical comedy-drama film. Directed by Morgan Neville, the film uses Lego animation to chronicle Williams’ life and career.
Many know Williams for his break out hit, “Happy,” but he is no stranger to the Hollywood crowd. In fact, Williams is a two-time Academy Award nominee. In 2014, Williams got a nod for his neo soul, #1 hit, “Happy” (for the film “Despicable Me 2”) for Best Original Song. Three year’s later, Williams added another Oscar nom as a producer for the film, “Hidden Figures.”
“Piece by Piece” which marks the fifth theatrical Lego-based movie and the first under Universal Pictures, boasts a crazy lineup that includes the voices of Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, and Snoop Dogg.
Making the rounds
“Piece by Piece” has already made waves in the film festival circuit, premiering at this year’s Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. The film had its official US release by Focus features this past weekend taking in nearly $4 million at the box office.
Williams was busy as ever on this project, contributing five original songs for the film, including the titular track “Piece by Piece.” The single, released a few weeks back, features some work from the Fabulous Marching Cavaliers from Princess Anne High School. This was a special collab for Williams as he spent some time on the drumline there back in the day.
The full soundtrack, distributed by Williams’ i am OTHER label and Columbia Records, dropped alongside the film’s release, giving fans one more way to experience the latest creative efforts from Williams.
