Mixy Music Monday: Jumaane Smith Rolls through Jazz Alley
Seattle’s own Jumaane Smith is set to hit the Jazz Alley stage next Monday as he brings his world-class trumpet skills, and some soulful vocals, back to his hometown. His one-night-only gig on September 16 is in support of his new release “Come On Home.”
Smith cut his teeth under the tutelage of Scott Brown at Roosevelt High School’s renowned jazz program. From there, Smith headed to New York on a full scholarship where he studied under the legendary Wynton Marsalis at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music.
Since then, Smith has played with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Michael Bublé, Barbra Streisand, and Christian McBride. He has even seen time on the silver screen as a trumpet solo actor in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story.
Jazz Alley is the perfect backdrop for Smith’s homecoming performance. For the past 45 years the club has served as a cornerstone of Seattle’s jazz scene and continues to showcase top talent. In a sense, it’s a full-circle moment for Smith as this performance highlights his global success and his Seattle roots.
Expect Smith to drop some original compositions from his latest release along with a dose of well-known, and well-loved, jazz standards for his hometown crowd.
You can catch Jumaane Smith at Jazz Alley on Monday, September 16, where he will be joined by Joe Doria on the B3 organ, D’Vonne Lewis behind the drums, Alexey Nikolaev on sax, and Andy Coe playing guitar. In the meantime, give a listen to the title track from his newest release.
