Mixy Movie Preview: ‘Megalopolis’ Promises Bold Vision. Does it Deliver?
We just recently came out of a darkened theater after watching the 50th anniversary 4K Restoration of Francis Ford Coppola’s classic thriller, “The Conversation.” Even after seeing the film a handful of times, catching the restored version on the big screen was a transport of delight.
Fast forward 50 years and Coppola’s latest opus and passion project, “Megalopolis” is about to hit the big screen. In between, Coppola has directed approximately 30 films – some more critically acclaimed than others. Of course, there was “The Godfather,” along with its subsequent chapters which earned him an Oscar. Coppola also gave us “Apocalypse Now” where the drama and controversy on set only heightened the on-screen intensity of this Vietnam War pic.
One of our favorite throwbacks from Coppola is “The Outsiders.” The cast alone in this teen coming of age flick was insane – Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, and Diane Lane.
Will “Megalopolis” join the list as one of those Coppola films we must see again (and again)? Hard to say. The early reviews from critics have been mixed, but they all point to the grandiose undertaking and Coppola’s bold vision which has definitely defined his career.
“Megalopolis” opens September 27 when you can judge for yourself. It stars an impressive cast of Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Giancarlo Esposito, Lawrence Fishburne, Shia LaBeouf, and other notables, so that should at least get you into the theater.
In the meantime, here’s the official trailer – which even had a bit of controversy swirling about.
