“Free Style Love Supreme” at Seattle Rep closes March 13

The reviews have been coming in hot for “Free Style Love Supreme” at Seattle Rep. And for good reason.

The masterminds behind this hip-hop/improv/comedy mash-up are Lin Manuel Miranda along with Thomas Kail and Anthony Veneziale.

If you stood on queue for the universally loved “Hamilton” or streamed “In the Heights” multiple times, “Free Style Love Supreme” is sure to be your treasured trifecta.

Much has been written about the show’s success with audiences and critics alike. It comes direct from Broadway with a special 2020 Tony Award in its back pocket.

As it has been pointed out, everything with the show is happening for the first time…and the last time. If you know improv, you know the format.

Audience members become participants, setting in motion the improv skills of the cast with suggested topics. After that, sit back and delight in the lightning quick freestyle rap, beatbox, and everything else they throw in the mix to bring the audiences’ suggestions to life.

The Hulu doc “We are Freestyle Love Supreme” is a good primer on how the show evolved. Interviews with the creators and cast are interspersed with snippets of its Broadway run. But there is no substitute for having that live experience. And that chance is coming to a close in Seattle.

“Freestyle Love Supreme” spits its final rhyme on March 13. Although the show has been one of the hotter tickets in Seattle since it opened last month, seats can still be had.
