Brownrigg Hard Cider Delivers a Soft Edge

If you find yourself along the stretch of 4th Ave near the stadiums in SODO, keep an eye out for an unassuming sandwich board at S. Massachusetts St., tempting you with a taste of hard cider. Make the turn down the dead-end street and you’ll find yourself at the Brownrigg Hard Cider Tap Room, where what waits inside the nondescript warehouse belies its industrial surroundings.

Owner Chris Brownrigg has been making hard cider for three years, often infused with herbs he harvests from his own garden. A couple of years back, Brownrigg set up his taproom in the same space that houses 3 Howls Distillery and has been offering tastings, growlers and squealers to thirsty customers ever since.

Most of Brownrigg’s ciders are nuanced and have a soft edge to them. Clocking in at about 6% ABV, these hazy ciders make for an easy afternoon or evening.  For a more boozy drink, you might want to try the Single Malt Whiskey Barrel Aged cider (a four-month maturation in one of its neighboring 3 Howls Single Malt Whiskey barrels does the trick). At 7.5% ABV, this is a perfect sipper on a cool summer night.

Brownrigg rolls open its door for tastings and growler fills during the week Wednesday through Friday from 4 – 8pm and on weekends 2 – 6pm. If you can’t swing by during those times but still want your fix of hard cider, Brownrigg has taps at several key locations across the city including Chuck’s Hop Shop (Greenwood), Clock Out Lounge (Beacon Hill), and Sawyer (Ballard).
