Beat the Heat and Catch Seattle’s Funniest at Bumbershoot’s Comedy Coop

Comedy fans looking to escape the outdoor heat over Labor Day weekend will find a brand-new setup inside the Seattle Children’s Theatre. Bumbershoot is moving its Comedy Coop into the air-conditioned, trading the crowded tents for real theater seating and sharp audio, far away from the thump of nearby bass lines.

Local stand-up Dan Hurwitz, known for creating the showcase The Disabled List, took the reins on curation this year. With it he brings a eclectic mix of hyper-specific regional concepts and targeted showcases.

Laughter on Tap

Festivalgoers can duck inside to catch #TheBLACKOUT, a set which puts top Black voices front and center. Nostalgia and career retrospectives take over during Seattle Expats, where those who left the Emerald City return to the stage where they cut their teeth, riffing on everything from rent prices in Los Angeles to what they actually miss about the rainy corner of the country.

The regional oddities take center stage in The Pacific North Weirdos, where comics poke fun at our well known subcultures like hiking obsessions, and passive-aggressive social quirks. Meanwhile, One Man Show A (Mostly) Women’s Comedy Show brings together a fast-paced roster of some of the funniest female writers and performers working the West Coast circuit.

This year also features the launch of the first-ever Comedy Coop Showdown, a summer-long stand-up competition hosted by Bumbershoot and Laughs Comedy Club. Running monthly from June through September at Laughs, the qualifier nights pack roughly 20 comedians into a single show, giving each just four minutes to make an impression. Audience members scan QR codes to vote alongside festival talent scouts, sending one winner per night into the final lineup. The prize for surviving the summer grind: a primetime slot inside Seattle Children’s Theatre during festival weekend.

Bumbershoot Arts & Music Festival runs September 5–6, 2026, at Seattle Center. For ticket information and full Comedy Coop schedule, visit bumbershoot.com.
