Monk’s Spirit Takes Over Smoke Jazz Club This Week

If you find yourself in New York this week, step into Smoke Jazz & Supper Club for one of the city’s can’t-miss events: Thelonious Monk Celebration, running October 15–19. The club’s warm glow and sharp acoustics set the stage for a powerhouse lineup led by pianist Kevin Hays, with Joe Lovano on tenor saxophone (Wednesday through Saturday), Miguel Zenón on alto (Sunday), Rick Rosato on bass, and Obed Calvaire on drums. Sets run at 7 and 9 p.m., with late shows at 10:30 on the weekend.
The series marks what would have been Monk’s 108th birthday, honoring an artist whose rhythmic tension and boundary-pushing harmonies changed the course of modern jazz. The influence of his tracks like “‘Round Midnight,” “Straight, No Chaser,” and “Blue Monk” are inescapable on the jazz landscape. making him one of the most recorded and influential composers since Duke Ellington.
Hays brings a cool sophistication to Monk’s angular language, while Lovano’s broad tone and lyrical phrasing give the material a spiritual depth. On the final night, Zenón’s sharp-edged alto adds a new dimension, bridging Monk’s bop roots with contemporary fire. Rosato and Calvaire lock it all down with rhythmic authority and open-hearted groove.
Smoke has long been one of New York’s go-to spots for serious listening – it’s certainly one of our favorite joints. With top players on the stage in a room that has all of the vibes, this week’s Monk tribute hits all the right notes.
