Mixy Music Monday: The Linda Lindas – Punk’s Next Generation

If you were at Bumbershoot this past weekend, you might have caught one of the festival’s most electric sets. The Linda Lindas, the punk quartet who’ve been shaking up stages from L.A. to London, tore through a set that proved jet lag is no match for youthful energy. They had just flown in from a festival in Scotland, but you’d never know it from the way they ripped through their songs with unrelenting force and charm.

The Linda Lindas started out young, raw, and loud, and that energy carried them straight into L.A.’s punk orbit. Two sisters, their cousin, and a friend, all half Asian and half Latinx, first plugged in at the Girlschool LA festival in 2018. Bela, Lucia, Eloise, and Mila were still kids, but that one show set their careers on a new trajectory. By the next year they were opening for Bikini Kill and performing alongside punk rock legends.

Their breakout moment came in 2021 with “Racist, Sexist Boy,” an explosive track that was born from a playground insult. The performance at the Los Angeles Public Library went viral, putting the band in the spotlight and landing them a deal with Epitaph Records.

On their latest album, No Obligation, each member contributes vocals and lyrics for a record that hits with plenty of buzzing guitars and catchy hooks. It’s classic punk, power pop, and riot grrrl, and we’re so here for it!

During the sick set the band proved again why they’re one of the more exciting acts of their generation. They’ve already logged more miles and played more festivals than many bands twice their age. If their set this weekend is any indication, The Linda Lindas aren’t slowing down anytime soon.
