Holland America’s $99 Standby Cruise Program Is the Sleeper Hit of the Summer Travel Season

For travelers who can act fast and pack even faster, Holland America Line just dropped what might be one of this summer’s biggest travel deals: last-minute standby Alaska cruises starting at just $99 a day.

The cruise line’s Standby Program offers significant discounts on unsold staterooms for travelers who can sail on short notice. It’s a smart way to save on luxury travel without compromising the experience. Instead of airport lines and last-minute airfare hunts, passengers can relax into verandah views, multi-course meals, and live entertainment aboard one of Holland America’s ships.

Departures are primarily out of Seattle and Vancouver, with dozens of roundtrip sailings to Alaska, as well as one-way voyages between Vancouver and Whittier. For those looking for a longer journey, there’s even a 28-day sailing that combines Alaska with the tropical draw of Hawaii.

The tradeoff? Flexibility. Travelers must be prepared to depart on short notice – anywhere from two to seven days before the cruise sets sail. Guests who sign up for the program are placed on a standby list and notified by Holland America if a stateroom becomes available. If there’s no availability, guests will be informed no later than 48 hours before departure.

Pricing is straightforward and budget-friendly: $99 per person, per day for inside or ocean-view cabins, and $129 per day for verandah staterooms. Rates include all taxes and fees.

Have it all

And yes, you can still spring for the line’s Have It All package. This optional upgrade bundles WiFi access, beverage packages, specialty dining, and shore excursion credits.

With over 150 departures included – ranging from quick getaways to 51-day extended itineraries – the Standby Program might be the ideal ticket for local residents with flexible schedules looking for a practical and affordable way to explore Alaska and beyond.
