Outstanding in the Field at Oxbow Farm
Over a hundred food and farm lovers traveled to Carnation, WA on Sunday to take in the bucolic surroundings of Oxbow Farm and Conservation Center while dining on Sophon’s incredible Khmer cuisine at Outstanding in the Field. Known for its ‘one long dining table,’ Outstanding in the Field travels the world for one night only dining experiences that connect with the local community to highlight some of the region’s best chefs and purveyors.
At Oxbow Farm, Chef Karuna Long of Sophon dazzled diners with his take on traditional and contemporary Cambodian cuisine. Along with the coursed dinner (which included prahok k’tiss – a traditional Khmer pork dip served with assorted Oxbow Farm vegetables, stuffed ‘angel’ wings with Pure Country Farms pork, and grilled ribeye from Klingman Family Farms), guests enjoyed perfect pairings from itä wines. Before the main event that sprawled across the 240-acre grounds, guests were treated to passed appetizers and beverages from Aslan Brewing Co. (including their award-winning Berliner Weisse – Disco Lemonade) and a refreshing rosé from itä. In between pre-dinner bites, there were farm tours and plenty of shade to cool off from the hotter than usual temps.
Chef Karuna Long took to Instagram following the event and shared his thoughts on the evening.
“To have you join us tonight is the kind of beauty that I am filled with immense gratitude for not just for myself & my team, but it’s realizing the dreams of sharing a story, a culture and a seat at my mom/grandma’s table. It’s revealing our beautifully diverse identities as humans. 40 years ago, my mom wouldn’t dare open an eatery for fear of American reception to something new & foreign from a community of refugees. Having you in those seats and joining us, you’ve truly gifted our mom & other refugees proof that community is real through food & culture.”
